The website Natural News is one of the pioneers of the natural health and alternative media movement, and it’s also drawn its fair share of controversy over the years.
While the site is well known for sharing health advice including research on “superfoods” and natural remedies, Natural News and its founder, Mike Adams, have also ruffled plenty of feathers with fiery anti-establishment articles and editorials on controversial topics such as the Ebola “crisis,” Zika virus, vaccines and many more.
The site’s boldness earned it millions of followers each month, but it also drew critics, especially in the mainstream and because of Adams’ rants and unwillingness to back down when faced with criticism.
Now, the site is under fire from an unexpected source: Google, which reportedly has blacklisted tens of thousands of articles.
Google Controversy Ignites
The rise of alternative media has also brought with it increasing threats in the censorship department: starting all the way at the top with President Donald Trump’s media preferences, and continuing down the line with Google.
This week, Google wiped out 140,000 NaturalNews.com articles from its database, preventing potential readers from accessing the site’s web pages when search. No prior warning was given according to this petition, which has been launched and shared by Adams against Google’s act of censorship on WhiteHouse.gov.
As the petition states:
“Google, which controls 67.5% of internet searches in the United States is attempting to silence any voice that doesn’t coincide with their political views. This incidentally targets some of the biggest voices in alternative media, such as NaturalNews.com and Infowars.com.”
No mention was made of how Infowars was being targeted, however an online advertiser, AdRoll, recently cut ties with them over political advertisements targeting Hillary Clinton; “all political content should focus on the merits of the candidate, and political messaging should not target special interests or groups, or imply affiliations,” the company said after it terminated a multi-million dollar partnership unexpectedly.
Natural News Responds
According to this article from the website Gizmodo.com, Google is not commenting on the Natural News censorship, and time will tell if they are able to recover their articles. For now, however, the controversy rages on.
“We don’t comment on individual sites, but if we find that a site violates one or more of these guidelines we may take manual action against it,” a Google spokesperson told the website. “Once a site has remedied the problem, the webmaster can submit the site for reconsideration.”
Natural News has reportedly said that it follows all Google terms of service rules, and the petition states. “This censorship of the Independent Media is a blatant attack on the first amendment rights of users,” the petition states.
