In spring 2015, Monsanto found itself in crisis mode after the World Health Organization declared the active ingredient in its best-selling weedkiller, Roundup, to be a “probable human carcinogen.”
Roughly two years later, the controversy over glyphosate continues to eat away at Monsanto’s reputation, and bottom line.
And now, in light of a recent unsealing of documents showing what appears to be a case of collusion between a former EPA official and Monsanto in an effort to submarine an investigation into the cancerous effects of glyphosate, one U.S. congressman is calling for an official investigation.
Congressman Calls for DOJ Investigation Into Monsanto Tactics
According to a new report from the website Sustainable Pulse, U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu has issued a statement regarding reports that Monsanto colluded with former EPA official Jess Rowland in order to put a stop to a key glyphosate safety study:
“New questions about the safety of Monsanto weed killer Roundup are deeply troubling. I worked on the glyphosate issue last term and I believe consumers should immediately stop using Roundup, whose core ingredient glyphosate has been labeled a likely carcinogen and has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. We need to find out if Monsanto or the Environmental Protection Agency misled the public.”
While glyphosate is widely used by farmers, gardeners, golf courses and many more groups of people, the constant questions about its safety are becoming too much to ignore, both from a scientific and political standpoint, for many political leaders like Lieu.
“Reports suggest that a senior official at the EPA worked to suppress a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services review of glyphosate, and may have leaked information to Monsanto,” he continued. “I believe that a Department of Justice investigation is warranted to look into any potential misconduct by employees of the EPA. I also believe a congressional hearing is immediately warranted.”
The news is sure to be welcome for frustrated environmental and health activists who have long wondered whether their concerns are actually being heard. However, it is also of great alarm considering glyphosate has been detected in everything from air and rain samples to the vaccines mandated for children in California, West Virginia, and Mississippi. (There is zero research to prove the safety of injecting glyphosate into a human.)
While Monsanto insists that its weedkiller is safe despite the presence of glyphosate as the active ingredient, critics say that the company has not allowed the scientific process to fully take place, commissioning its own research and colluding with government officials for years.
